Born into a human settlement under unknown circumstances, Samurai Jack struggles with his identity as a Kalashtar. He is often haunted by day with images he knows he could not have drawn from memory, involving a single dark entity he believes to to be a personification of the Dreaming Dark organization. He therefore harbors a deep hatred of the Inspired, the Quori, and any agents of the Dreaming Dark. At the core of his anxiety is the secret worry that he himself might be a slave for their purposes, a husk not yet taken over.
He is an eager but secretive person. Hoping to seek out similarities in the material world with his visions, he is an aggressive and courageous adventurer, but prefers the company of others in doing so. Ultimately his goal is to rid the material world of the Quori, hoping their actions that severed the material world and the region of dreams can be restored, so that he may finally visit.
At a young age, Samurai Jack’s adopted family moved to a quiet harbor town. Talking to the sailors, he heard of distant places he had no knowledge of, and their stories enticed him. He soon decided to flee and stowaway on a merchant ship, hoping his journey around the world would clarify his developing visions. After being caught by the ship’s captain, he was able to convince him to keep him on as a hired hand.
Seeking friendship from the rotating cast of sailors that would join him on the ship, their stories and retelling of legends exaggerated his own recollection of his visions. He soon realized the life of a merchant sailor was fraught with difficulty, and rarely did he step outside the port taverns of the places they visited. He struggled to save up enough money and favor to leave the ship, which he finally did, years later, in a town near a university. With new resolve to focus on intellectual pursuits, he gained entry.
